Screening process helps to keep both the donor and receiver safe

The blood gives a new life to someone and at the same time wrong blood will lead to a critical situation, so there are many chances for misconception about giving and receiving blood.
The common worries for blood recipients and even donors are whether the blood is transported to the hospitals or not. But in reality, bloods are collected and safely supplied to the hospitals and blood centres. Before performing a blood transfusion, blood is carefully screened and certified that it’s safe.

Donor screening stage:
This is the first step it takes place in all the hospitals or blood centres. It is completely like a face-to –face question session based on your health. The questionnaire asks donor about a health condition, continuing any treatments, and other medical related question. This process is mainly for checking your eligibility to donate blood. They will check your body temperature, blood pressure, weights, age, height, and check your haemoglobin levels. After completing this stage, only eligible donors can give blood.

Blood Testing stage:
After receiving blood from donors, it is sent to the lab for testing process. This process is an important one because through this the lab technicians find out the various infections or diseases like hepatitis B and C, leukaemia, AIDS/HIV, and many dangerous diseases. So this helps to avoid the wrong blood transfusion to the patients. If any blood results positive for any of this disease, lab technician disposes the blood and inform the donor about the test.

The above screening processes help us to ensure that we have a safe blood supply. Now, the receiver can understand that the blood came from a right donor.

Human blood is separated into four major groups. They are A, B, AB and O. Each letter refers to the kind of antigens or protein on your red blood cells.

1.      A type blood group – Contains A type antigen on your red cells and B antibodies in your blood plasma.
2.      B type blood group- Contains B type antigens on your red cells and A antibodies in your blood plasma.
3.      AB type blood group – Contains both A and B antigens on your red cells and no A and B antibodies at all in your blood plasma.
4.      O type blood group- You have neither A or B antigens on your red cells, but you have both no A and B antibodies at all in your blood plasma.

Each blood group is also combined with its Rhesus factor which is also called Rh factor. Combinations like Rh+ or Rh -. Checking or knowing the blood type is necessary during blood transfusion. Platelets in Blood – UAE Donors

Platelet is an important for your body which is produced in bone- marrow. The function of platelets is to form a clot in your blood, and avoid bleeding. Normal platelet count starts from 150,000 to 450,000 units per cubic millimetre of blood. Platelets are usually small in size, with irregular shape. The life span of the platelets is only 5 to 9 days. If the count of the platelets is low means then, it will produce an excessive bleeding. If the count is high also leads to danger, because it will produce a problem like stroke, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism.

Symptoms of low platelet count:
  1. Easy bruising
  2. Red dots on your skin
  3. Red or pink colored urine
  4. Red or brown colored sputum or vomit
  5. Dizziness, constant headache- Bleeding in head
  6. Bleed from your teeth gums.

Platelets help to block the bleeding which is occurring from the wound. Clot normally formed when the blood is exposed to air. The platelets use the air and stop the bleeding. The presence of calcium and vitamin K in the blood helps in the formation of clots.

Red blood cells- Function, Count, Color

Red blood cells are also called as erythrocytes. Red blood cells duty is to carry the oxygen throughout the body. Hemoglobin is the main component in the red blood cell which gives the red color to these cells and also used to handle the oxygen. A single blood droplet contains more number of red blood cell which helps to remove the unwanted gases. Red Blood Cells can adjust the blood pressure by releasing the chemical ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which helps to expand the vessels. The life span of this cell is from 100- 120 days.

The blood passes over the body and it receives oxygen only by the help of hemoglobin. The empty hemoglobin combines with the body tissues and shifts the waste gases from the body to outside. Balance or normal red blood cell count should be maintained otherwise it will lead to some dangerous diseases. If the count is high means it will produce some major diseases like kidney problems, dehydration, pulmonary fibrosis, diabetes and cancer. If the count is low means, then the body gets tired and feel sleepy.

White blood cells- Functions, Count, Appearance

White blood cells main function is to protect our body from infections. It is called as leukocyte or white corpuscle. When germs enter into our body, this WBC will handle a special way to fight with the germs. The life span of WBC is short, living from a few days or weeks. A single droplet of blood contains 7,000 – 25,000 WBC. If your body contains less count of WBC means, so viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders are easy occupied in your body and spoil your health. If any parts of the body are affected means, WBC rush front to destroy the harmful substances and bring it to the normal state.

White blood cells normally produce inner side of the bone marrow, which continuously produce it because some cells have short life span. WBC is present in your blood and lymphatic tissues.

An adult body contains the count between 4,500 and 11,000 white blood cells per cubic millimeter of blood. The count will become low during the body at rest and the count will become high during practice some physical exercises.

The appearance of the cells under a microscope, white cells are divided into three major divisions. They are lymphocytes, granulocytes, and monocytes.

Lymphocytes- This is again divided into B lymphocyte and T lymphocyte, which are responsible for detecting the foreign agents and automatically removed.

Granulocytes- It is normally occupied high in the white cells. It includes neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils.

Monocytes- It is present in the WBC between 4 and 8 percent which moves from the blood to the infected area. It is again divided into macrophages. These cells are used to kill the harmful substances and clean up the cellular debris from infection part.

Blood- Do you know about the blood components?

Blood is a specialized fluid which circulating inside the body. The normal person has about 5 liters of blood in his body. The blood is divided into four major components. They are  plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

The functions of the blood are like transporting oxygen and nutrients to the lungs and tissues, forming blood clots , consists of numerous cell and protein which make the blood thicker, carry the waste products to the kidneys and liver and controlling the body temperature

Plasma- It holds pale yellow color of water, salt and protein. The blood gives half of its place to this Plasma. The primary function of the plasma is to transport blood cells throughout your body carrying nutrients, waste products, antibodies, clotting proteins, chemical messengers

Red Blood Cells (RBC) - this RBC occupied 40-45%in the blood. It contains hemoglobin pigment which helps to carry the oxygen from one place to another.

White Blood Cells (WBC) - It is mainly works against the infection. Blood contains 55 to 70 percent of the total white blood cell count.

Platelets- Platelets are not exactly like other cells which is small in size and that helps the blood to clot.
